The growing season was optimal this year for such a delicate varietal. Golden straw in color with a brilliant nose of papaya, green pineapple, and apricot.  The mouth is well balanced with flavors of guava, banana, and white peach balanced with lovely acidity.

 

2014 Rosarubra “Triluna”, Pietranico, Italy 78
This complex blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and Malvasia offers initial notes of honey and golden apple followed by a well-rounded mid-palate. The clusters are harvested once slightly overripe to ensure a rich profile without the use of oak.  A touch of white flower and bursts of acid add to the finish.

 

2013 Tablas Creek “Esprit de Tablas Blanc”, Paso Robles, California     86
Roussanne is primarily present on the nose evoking wood, peach pit, and butterscotch.  The mouth is more tightly wound than its first impression. Grenache blanc fills the palate with cloves, allspice and grilled peaches. Further balance is achieved with the addition of Picpoul producing a floral and citrus driven finish.  This is a classic style of wine blending made for food as delicious as itself.

 

2014 Freemark Abbey Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California     68
Light greenish straw in color, this Chardonnay expresses fruit aromas of pear, apple, white peach, ripe banana, kiwi and lemon-lime. Oak aging adds to the complexity by adding spice flavors like nutmeg and toasty aromatic cedar.

Bright gold in color with greenish highlights. The bouquet brings together hawthorn blossoms, marzipan, hazelnut, lemon-grass and green apple. Milky butter, hot croissant and mineral aromas are detectable, as is honey. This wine combines grace with a well defined character and a remarkable concentration.

Juicy peaches, pineapple and lime greet the nose, followed by vanilla and cedar. Ripe tropical fruit and fig jam flood the lush, silky palate.

Soft spice, vanilla and nectarines mark the lengthy finish with fresh, mouthwatering acidity.

Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara are blended to create an Italian classic. Vibrant ruby in color, aromas of red currants and cherries complement undertones of almonds and plums. The palate is high to medium bodied with soft tannins and a pleasant, refreshing finish.

Garnacha, Carinena, and Syrah offer dark cherry and jam aromas on the nose against a backdrop of eucalyptus and toast.  The palate is balanced with well-rounded tannins and the perfect amount of acidity.

Deep ruby in color with a concentrated palate.  This 100% Cabernet Franc boasts bold current notes with aromas of black pepper and vanilla finishing with smooth delicious tannins.

This New World style blend of Southern Rhone varietals evokes a palate respectful to its name. Mourvedre, Syrah, and Grenache are woven together resulting in notes black pepper and red fruit softly ending with a plummy finish.

This historic wine of the Chateau is oak barrel aged for 22 months.  It is the perfect expression of a Malbec from Cahors. The nose has a beautiful bouquet of cherry and blueberries. Oak is integrated well, leading into a long powerful finish with fine tannins.

Montepulciano and Merlot harmoniously produce a nose studded with coffee and spice while cherry, plum and red fruit dominate the palate.  Partial drying of the cluster on the vine create a concentrated profile with perfect balance of oak, acid and tannin.

A week of rack drying the clusters concentrates the flavor of the fruit giving off a generous aroma of freshly picked cherries, vanilla and a delightful trace of spiciness. This wine is dry with a rich body of cherries and red berries.

Distinctly floral on the nose this Syrah immediately develops ripe red fruit, spice and leather. The palate is harnessed, fresh and persistent.

 

2011 Pax Syrah, Russian River Valley, California     115
Arguably one of the most fascinating wines produced from Castelli-Knight Ranch, Pax is more savory than fruit driven.  A soaring nose of blackberry is noticeable from several feet.  The palate is muscular with notes of smoke, tobacco, black olive, and licorice.

 

2013 Lewis Cellars Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California     240
The nose is compelling with layers of oak spice, blackberry, and candle wax.  A massive arc of concentrated berry forms the initial taste finishing creamy with hints of chocolate, clove, and espresso.

 

2014 Stag’s Leap “Artemis” Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California     98
Inviting aromas of black cherry and plum with hints of vanilla, oak and spice. On the palate, the wine has soft ripe mixed berry and plum flavors with a medium-bodied mouth feel and round, satin-like tannins.

 

2011 Penfolds “Grange” Shiraz, Austrailia     700
This Shiraz is instantly aromatic, spicy and caramelized. The palate is ripe with blackberry, currants and figs. A follow up of earthy notes mingles with coffee and leather finishing long and gripping.

A traditional blend of Merlot, Cab, and Cab Franc show wonderfully in the glass.  A soft nose with expressive fruit from the Merlot balances delicately with dark berries and currant notes rendered from the Cabernet. 

 

2013 Mullan Road Cellars, Red Blend, Columbia River Valley, Washington   80

A potpourri of black tea and juniper introduce the nose.  The palate continues with hints of plum, dried strawberry and berries.  The finish is long, velvety and dense.  This Northwest project from the Cakebread family is very enjoyable.

 

2013 William Hill, Cabernet Sauvignon, North Coast, California     80
The warm dry growing season translated into rich fruit driven juice. The Napa and Sonoma fruit produced deep blackberry and cherry notes while the fruit from Mendocino added hints of caramel and cacao creating structure and balance.

 

2013 Louis M. Martini, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California   55

This Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a deep burgundy color with aromas of dark fruits, smoky cedar and dried herbs. Concentrated flavors of black cherry and blackberry are framed nicely by cedar and toast notes on the finish

 

2013 Tenuta San Guido “Sassicaia” Super Tuscan, Tuscany, Italy      375
Once called “Vino da Favola” or “Fairy Tale Wine” this deep ruby red wine lives up to its legend. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, it offers aromas and flavors of black raspberries, anise, dark chocolate and fig with big firm tannins.

 

2013 Penfolds “Bin 138” Barossa, Australia     62
Unabashed, the nose bursts from the first pour.  Rhone like flavors linger with notes of kirsch, berry, cinnamon, and liquorice. Structure and tannin are provided from the Shiraz while Grenache and Mataro add spice and complexity.
